• Work with your healthcare professional to access the Accu-Chek Bolus Advisor feature, designed so you can easily adjust your meal dose based on your current blood sugar level and insulin already in your system.

To access this feature, it must be set up by your healthcare professional with your personal settings. Contact your healthcare professional about activating the insulin calculator if you’re interested in setting up this feature.

After activation, do not adjust any settings without consulting your healthcare professional.

The Accu-Chek Bolus Advisor, as a component of the Accu-Chek Connect diabetes management app, is indicated for the management of diabetes by calculating an insulin dose or carbohydrate intake based on user-entered data. Before use by carbohydrate counting patients, a physician or healthcare professional must activate the bolus calculator and provide the patient-specific target blood glucose, insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio, and insulin sensitivity parameters to be programmed into the software. Before use by assigned meal bolus patients (age 22 and older), a physician or healthcare professional must activate the bolus calculator and provide patient-specific target blood glucose, assigned meal insulin doses, and insulin sensitivity parameters to be programmed into the software.

WARNING: Do not use bolus advice with neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) or any other intermediate-acting insulin. Do not use bolus advice if basal insulin dose is unstable. Long-acting insulin should not be used as a meal bolus or as a correction bolus.

  • You and your healthcare professional will customize the Accu-Chek Bolus Advisor to your diabetes therapy plan and goals.

Your healthcare professional will work with you on settings such as your blood sugar target range, pre-meal insulin doses, and insulin sensitivity. The app recommends an insulin dose based on these numbers, your current blood glucose and active insulin from recent injections. So, the first time you use the Bolus Advisor, enter insulin delivered in the last 8 hours. After that, make sure you log all your insulin injections in the app.

  • Once activated, use the following steps to get insulin dose recommendations in moments.

First, check your blood sugar as usual. Keep your paired phone nearby with the Accu-Chek Connect app running in the background.

If you have notifications enabled, you will see an alert when your phone receives the result from your meter.

Note: To use the Accu-Chek Bolus Advisor feature, your meter must be paired with your phone.

The app doesn’t have to be open on your screen to receive results from the meter. If you opened the app recently and did not quit or close it, it is running in the background.

  • After the result is transferred from your meter to your phone, open the Accu-Chek Connect app. You can receive an insulin dose recommendation based on your current blood sugar within 15 minutes of the test time.

Tap on the bolus advice minutes remaining bar.

  • The time remaining to use your current blood sugar appears at the top of the Bolus Insulin Advisor screen.

Select the Meal you are about to eat.

To help track information later, also tap and edit the Event field to associate the blood sugar test result with a specific mealtime.

  • Tap Add meal photo to capture your dish.

Once you have a good snapshot, tap Use Photo.

    Then tap Next.

Attaching a meal photo is optional but has important benefits. When you share your data with your healthcare professional, these snapshots will aid your discussions around mealtime insulin doses.

  • Your recommended insulin dose will now appear on the Bolus Insulin Advisor recommendation screen. You can see the breakdown of how the calculation covers your regular meal dose, as well as current blood sugar and active insulin.

  • There may be instances where you need to inject a different amount of insulin. It is recommended that you work in conjunction with your healthcare professional prior to dosing a different amount.

If your healthcare professional has decided that you will inject a different amount, tap the U field. Enter the amount of insulin you will actually use. Then tap Save.

If you’re using the dose recommended, just tap Save.

  • The app returns to the home screen with the blood sugar value, carb estimate and meal photo recommended insulin dose, and amount of insulin injected saved in one entry.

All that important data, right at your fingertips!

Next, learn how to set up text messaging so you can share important blood sugar information with people you care about in one tap.
